Custom upholstered furniture can be made from scratch or modified from a clients existing piece. Frames are made from hardwood for strength with glued and double dowelled block or plate braced joints for rigidity and longevity. Springing may either be coil springs where there is sufficient depth or sinuous springing  where the piece is meant to be shallow. A covering of burlap, and cotton batting defines the form which is then covered with a muslin casing to hold the batting in place and prevent the final cover from abrading the batting. Loose seat cushions are commonly used  on contemporary style pieces they can be reversed or covered with an alternate fabric to provide contrast with the back  which generally does not have separate cushions.
